Homocysteine

An amino acid made when the body processes methionine. Folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 are needed to clear it, so it builds up when they run low.

AWhat moves Homocysteine

14 of 27 studied

In human studies, 5 of the 27 supplements and practices researched so far lowered homocysteine, 2 raised it and 1 changed it without a clear direction. 4 showed no change and 2 had mixed results. 13 were never studied for it.

Moves it8

Human studies found a change. The grade reflects the studies behind it, from A (strongest) to D.

ResveratrolLowersGrade A

Resveratrol lowers homocysteine.

MagnesiumLowersGrade B

Magnesium lowers homocysteine.

L-carnitineRaisesGrade B

L-carnitine raises homocysteine.

AshwagandhaLowersGrade B
BerberineImprovesGrade B
Red yeast riceLowersGrade B
Ubiquinol (CoQ10)LowersGrade B
TaurineRaisesGrade C

Taurine raises homocysteine.

Studied, no change4

Studies looked and found no meaningful change. That is a result, not missing data.

ZincNo changeGrade A

Studies of Zinc found no change in homocysteine.

Omega-3No changeGrade A

Studies of Omega-3 found no change in homocysteine.

CreatineNo changeGrade B
Vitamin D3No changeGrade B

Mixed results2

Studies disagree, or the direction depends on who was studied.

NACMixed resultsGrade A
NAD+Mixed resultsGrade A

Studies of NAD+ and homocysteine disagree.

Not studied13

No usable human study has measured Homocysteine with these. A gap is not a negative result: nobody has looked.

Why trials measure it. B vitamin trials use it as the main measure of whether the vitamins changed this pathway.

About this marker: Homocysteine Test (MedlinePlus, U.S. National Library of Medicine).

Evidence states come from published human studies found in PubMed and OpenAlex and read by a model pipeline. "Not studied" means no usable human study was found for this marker, which is a gap, not a negative result. Every result links its studies so you can check it.
