Cortisol

A steroid hormone made by the adrenal glands that helps regulate the stress response, blood sugar and blood pressure. It follows a daily rhythm, highest in the morning.

Measured in
Blood, saliva or urine
Units
µg/dL, nmol/L
Also called
serum cortisol, salivary cortisol, hydrocortisone
A rounded protein; the cut-away view shows a coral cortisol molecule inside.

AWhat moves Cortisol

18 of 27 studied

In human studies, 8 of the 27 supplements and practices researched so far lowered cortisol and 2 raised it. 6 showed no change and 2 had mixed results. 9 were never studied for it.

Moves it10

Human studies found a change. The grade reflects the studies behind it, from A (strongest) to D.

Studied, no change6

Studies looked and found no meaningful change. That is a result, not missing data.

HIITNo changeGrade B

Studies of HIIT found no change in cortisol.

Studies of Omega-3 found no change in cortisol.

Studies of Vitamin D3 found no change in cortisol.

Mixed results2

Studies disagree, or the direction depends on who was studied.

Not studied9

No usable human study has measured Cortisol with these. A gap is not a negative result: nobody has looked.

BThe molecule

Corticosteroid-binding globulin with cortisol

Most cortisol in blood travels bound to this carrier protein.

Coral: cortisol in its binding pocket.

Structure: PDB 2VDY · X-ray, 2.3 Å · Zhou et al., J Mol Biol 2008. Rendered from atomic coordinates in Blender; 2,862 atoms, about 8.1 nm across. Highlight source.

Why trials measure it. Stress and sleep trials, including adaptogen studies, measure it to test whether an intervention changes the stress response.

About this marker: Cortisol Test (MedlinePlus, U.S. National Library of Medicine).

Evidence states come from published human studies found in PubMed and OpenAlex and read by a model pipeline. "Not studied" means no usable human study was found for this marker, which is a gap, not a negative result. Every result links its studies so you can check it.
